Malta Permanent Residence Programme

Malta Permanent Residence Programme

What is Malta Permanent Residency Programme?

The Malta Permanent Residency Programme (MPRP), also known as Malta’s Golden Visa, is an immigration route to permanent residency in Malta. The MPRP was announced and started accepting applications in 2021 through legal notice 121 of 2021. This residence by investment programme grants residence subject to payment of a contribution to the government, an investment in property and a donation to charity.

Malta’s Permanent Residence Programme allows family members to join in one application and obtain permanent residence within six months. This programme is unique compared to other countries’ residence programmes since it immediately grants permanent residency without paying for renewals. In addition, there is no minimum physical stay in Malta.

Residence cards are issued for five years and are renewed indefinitely as long as the applicant maintains a property (which can be rented).

An applicant can qualify for the Malta Permanent Residence Programme by showing that they hold at least 500,000 Euros in assets, out of which 150,000 Euros must be in the form of liquid assets such as money in a bank account, shares, stocks, bonds and funds.

Apart from this, the applicant needs to fulfil three obligations:

  1. Pay a donation of 2,000 Euro to a charity organisation in Malta, and,
  2. Pay a non-refundable donation of 98,000 Euros when opting to rent a property in Malta or 68,000 Euros when opting to purchase a property in Malta.
